KYDD, JAMES PHILLIP

Leading seaman, 215363, Royal Navy H.M.S. “Aboukir.” 

Leading seaman James Philip Kydd (Jim Smith) of 3 Mount Pleasant, Beckenham, aboard amoured cruiser HMS Aboukir when it was sunk by a German submarine on 22 September 1914, also HMS Hogue and HMS Cessy when coming to the rescue,  with loss of 62 officers and 1,397 ratings. Remembered on Chatham Naval Memorial.

Adopted son of Mr. S. and Mrs. Christina Smith, of 3, Mount Pleasant, Beckenham, Kent., born Beckenham 13/10/1883 Another local man lost on the Aboukir was Stoker HORACE CROKER who as a naval reservist had been working at the Shortlands pumping Station
