Born in Beckenham.

KEVIN LUESHING, born in Beckenham April 1968, is the owner and driving force behind Sports Plus Management. Kevin formed the company to provide his clients with a service of quality and style. This in many ways reflects his previous career in the ring where he reigned as British Welterweight Champion and also IBO World Champion. His finest moment came when contesting for the World Title in 1997. He was fighting Felix Trinidad, thought by many to be the best pound for pound boxer in the World. Though Kevin did not win, he had the satisfaction of putting Trinidad on the canvas with a beautiful right left combination.

Kevin was a well-respected boxer, so when he eventually retired from the ring he decided to use that respect, and his wealth of contacts, to start Sports Plus Management. The company specialises in promotional work for a number of top sporting and show business personalities in various aspects of the leisure industry. The company has also developed a reputation for hospitality packages, for all types of sporting and musical events. All travel is organised through an ABTA agent.

Recent projects have involved Kevin and Nigel Benn working on the hit ITV show “I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here”, the show helped Nigel raise funds for the NSPCC. Kevin and Nigel then went on to complete a project for Channel 5, with Nigel facing his old adversary Chris Eubank in a Gladiatorial contest in Rome, and just recently Martin Offiah appeared in Sky One’s “The Match”

NICK HEYWARD, born in Beckenham 20 May 1961, is an English singer and guitarist, best known for his work in the New Wave band Haircut 100. Heyward formed Haircut 100 in 1980. Haircut 100 released just one album with Heyward, Pelic an West (1982), which spawned a string of hit singles. He then quit to pursue a solo career in 1983. Haircut 100 recorded a second album without him in 1984, but broke up when it failed to repeat the success of their debut. Likewise, in comparison with Haircut 100, Heyward’s solo career has been modestly successful commercially, although several of his albums received positive reviews. All members of the band attended Kelsey Park School and played a concert there just after the release of the first single.

Heyward’s solo debut album from 1983, North of a Miracle gave him his first solo hit, “Whistle Down the Wind”. “Warning Sign” was released in 1984 as a stand-alone single, and reached #25 in the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by Postcards from Home (1986) and I Love You Avenue (1988). Heyward released From Monday to Sunday in 1993, which heralded a change to a more classic rock style. The album had an American radio hit with “Kite” which reached #4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Heyward has released new music less frequently in recent years. Open Sesame Seed (2001), a collaboration with British actor/musician Greg Ellis, featured Ellis reading Heyward’s poetry to the accompaniment of Heyward’s musical backing. An album of songs recorded with singer/actress India Dupre, The Mermaid and the Lighthouse Keeper, was released in 2006.

CAREY BLYTON Composer of ‘Bananas in Pyjamas’ Millions more people have heard something of Carey Blyton’s music than realise it. He wrote widely for television, film and advertising, and his nonsense song “Bananas in Pyjamas” was taken up by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1973 and eventually became a huge international success in The Great Banana Phenomenon, a series of some 200 five-minute TV shows each topped and tailed by Blyton’s song.

Carey lived in and around Bromley for 60 years. He was born in Beckenham in 1932 and lived there some 30 years before moving to Swanley in 1965 where he lived for another 30 years with his wife Mary and their two sons Matthew and Daniel. Although it was in Swanley where most of his music and stories were written, it was the formative years in Beckenham that developed Carey’s character and musical career. However, Carey is well known all over West Kent, where his music and stories have been broadcast by local radio.

  1. Do we know where Betty and Sydney Box were born/lived in Beckenham? I’ve found out that Sydney was living at 11 College Parade in 1932 – is it still standing?

  2. I was wallowing in nostalgia for Kelsey Park when I came across this section showing my cousins David Sylvian and Steve Jansen. Incidentally my Husband Geoff was also born in Beckenham in the old Maternity Hospital.
