Marjorie and Monty Tyler met at Brockwell Park lido and were married on 30th March 1946 at St. Matthew’s Church in Brixton. Monty moved to East Africa to work on the Ground Nut Scheme in Tanganyika and shortly afterwards Marjorie followed with their son Barry. The family grew as Malcolm and Robin arrived and they soon moved to Dar-Es-Salaam where they lived happily near the beach and both Marjorie and Monty started new jobs.
They returned to England in 1962 and settled into the local community. Monty became a member of Park Langley Tennis Club and played golf regularly at Shirley Park. Meanwhile, Marjorie joined the congregation at St.John’s Church and played an active role in the Townswomen’s Guild. She also played bowls at Stanhope Grove where she was elected to be both Captain and Chairman several times.
Marjorie and Monty celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary together in 1996 by hosting a garden party for their many friends and relations at the family home in Eden Park

These two lovely people are responsible for my family living in Beckenham. Both families spent a number of years in Dar Es Salam, Tanzania, Africa during the early 1960s. The Tylers had settled in Beckenham when most of the expats left Africa, my family returned to our roots in Scotland when my father took a long leave from the BBC. We had to move to London to be nearer BBC headquarters so my father visited the Tylers and decided my family should move to Beckenham, and we did.
The last time I saw Monty was in Kelsey Park when he was out for a walk one morning, in fact not far away from this bench. The last time I saw Marjorie was when I did a History talk for The Eden Park Townswomen Guild. R.I.P.
